DEG Commits $54M USD to FEI to Expand Renewable Energy in Africa
The Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI) has secured a $54 million (€50 million) investment from German development finance institution DEG, reinforcing its mission to scale small-scale decentralized renewable energy (DRE) projects across Africa. This funding will provide much-needed capital to support renewable energy initiatives, addressing energy deficits and promoting sustainable economic growth across the continent.
With DEG’s support, FEI will expand its financing capabilities, enabling more off-grid and distributed renewable energy solutions that increase access to electricity, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and accelerate Africa’s energy transition. The investment aligns with DEG’s commitment to supporting private-sector-led sustainable development, promoting economic growth while mitigating climate change.
Carmen de Castro, Managing Director at Cygnum Capital Asset Management, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that the investment reflects strong trust in Cygnum Capital’s expertise as a leading fund manager. FEI has established itself as a major lender in Africa’s DRE sector, with over $400 million in cumulative commitments across 23 countries to date.
Monika Beck, Member of the DEG Management Board, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting that this is DEG’s second cooperation with Cygnum Capital within a year. She noted that the investment aligns with DEG’s strategy to drive high-impact climate and development initiatives by providing long-term capital to expand renewable energy projects across Africa.
In many African countries, unreliable electricity grids and costly fossil fuel-based backup systems have hindered economic growth and energy access. By scaling DRE solutions, FEI aims to provide cleaner, more affordable, and reliable electricity, reducing reliance on high-emission energy sources and fostering the development of Africa’s renewable energy sector.
FEI, established in 2019, is managed by Cygnum Capital Asset Management, a firm with a strong track record in green investments across Africa. This latest investment follows DEG’s previous commitment to Cygnum Capital’s Africa Local Currency Bond Fund (ALCBF), aimed at increasing private capital mobilization for infrastructure and energy projects.
